Male cell phone users may want to take note: a recently published study suggests that radio waves created by mobile phones can degrade the quality of a man’s sperm. The new study, authored by the Cleveland Clinic, has caught the attention of the medical community and many male cell phone users.
The Cleveland Clinic study showed that men who talk on mobile phones for four hours or more daily had a significantly decreased quality of sperm than men in a control group, who did not use cell phones as often. The study is part of a mounting body of evidence which suggests that cell phone use could have potentially serious health effects.
cellphone headacheIt is important to note however, that the study did not show a clear line of causation between frequent use of cell phones and degraded sperm quality, and it is unclear at present how radio waves from mobile phones could damage sperm.
What the study did show is that a test group of 32 men who were identified as frequent cell phone users (using cell phones for four hours or more daily) had a significantly lower quality of sperm than normal.
Mobile phone manufacturers and networks have maintained that radio waves produced by the phones pose no health risks; but there are still unanswered questions about the effects of long-term use. For example, a similar study has shown tentative links between brain cancer and frequent cell phone use. Other research has suggested that women who use cell phones excessively during pregnancy tend to give birth to children with behavioral problems.
Researchers admit that more studies are necessary in order to determine if sperm quality degradation is a serious risk for men who are heavy cell phone users. It has been noted that many men place there cell phones in trouser pockets and use a hands-free device to talk. Could the placement of the phone so close to the male testes be the cause of the degraded sperm quality? Scientists are still uncertain, but the theory is gaining popularity among many researchers.
For now, many experts are recommending that men who want to start a family avoid placing mobile phones in trouser pockets, and keep their cells a safe distance away from the groin area. Dr. Edmund Sabenegh of the Center for Male Fertility maintains that research needs to continue in order to, “gain a better understanding of the true impact these devices are having on every part of the body.”
Until all the data is in, however, it could be wise for men to keep their cell phones as far away from the reproductive organs as possible.
